This is a wonderful Ryokan with an amazing staff. The dinners were especially delicious.

I would highly recommed this unusual hotel.

I hope you will see the monkeys from the dining hall or the room decks like we did!

Thank you so much for having us.

I had a very relaxing stay at Ryokan Funamisou. The lady at the front desk was so kind and very patiently explained to me how things work at a traditional Japanese inn. The food was delicious and the portion was so huge! The bath had a nice view of the adjoining hillside and I really enjoyed my late night soaks. I really look forward to staying here again on my next visit to Japan!

we have stayed at the ryokan funamisou in family. We were five : two adults and three childrens, who are quite old now ! We have appreciated a lot our staying. The building was, at the first sight, quite ugly but in fact, the location near the lake is fantastic. the people there were very sympathic. The meal was a surprise and everybody have appreciated it a lot. This location is really a very good adress and we recommand it.

I spent a wonderful 2 days at Ryokan Funamisou. Originally, I had just wanted to find a quiet Ryokan close to Nikko but this area was so beautiful and quiet and relaxing that I spent most of my time in Kawagoe and in the Ryokan, instead of Nikko.

Funamisou is quiet, clean, spacious and very relaxing. The three highlights for me were:
1. The incredible staff! Absolutely amazing service.
2. The awesome onsen. So relaxing. Most times I was the only person there and the view was incredible!
3. The wonderful food. The people who prepare the food are superb! The food is so delicious, healthy, and it is very authentic Japanese style.

Of course the rooms are also great. Very big and relaxing. I also recommend going to the gym to use the cheap massage machine chairs after some time in the Onsen.

Thank you for everything! Funamisou is exceptional value for money. I am an Australian living in Tokyo and will be back for sure!

PS. Do not visit if you are seeking a place with a vibrant nightlife and noisy/rowdy. This is a very quiet and relaxing area.

The room, the food, the onsen, everything was amazing! The staff was also very kind! Also, while not in Nikko, the Ryokan is easily accessible from Nikko train stations: 30 minutes by Tobu train and 5 minutes on foot (pick up the train schedule at Tobu Nikko station). NB: the different Nikko passes available from Tobu cover the train transfers between Nikko and Kosagoe, where the Ryokan is situated. Overall, I heartily recommend Ryokan Funamisou!

My wife and I had the luxury of virtually having the place to ourselves. The indoor and outdoor hot springs were great for first timers like ourselves. The Japanses style rooms were adeqaute for the price we paid and the experience we had. Both our dinners and breakfasts were filling and added to the whole experience. Very much recommended.

I love Ryokan Funamisou! Although its located quite out of the way from Nikko (40mins train ride and frequency of train is very little) and a relatively far walk from the Kawagoe station, the view is awesome, the air is fresh and the location is quaint and quiet! I had the best sleep there (throughout my entire Japan trip) and was really sad to leave after my two nights stay. The rooms are quite big (compared to hotels in Tokyo) and its very clean.
I found 8500yen with the dinner and breakfast included to be value for money because in November, the sun sets at around 5pm and after that it was really cold to go and have dinner outside. The food there is really good too and the staff working there are kind and friendly to assist! I would totally go back to stay in Ryokan Funamisou if i ever visit Nikko again! Thank you to all the staff for this enjoyable trip!

This is an excellent Ryokan and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The food was fabulous and the rooms clean and spacious. It is a pity more of the non Japanese guests felt unable to eat their evening meal in their yukata (provided)after they had visited the onsen as is traditional in Japan. The Ryokan is actually in Kosagoe and the journey from Nikko is two train journeys away, about 40mins. Whilst this was well worth it once we realised it was not in Nikko, it should be noted that the last train with connection from Nikko is around 7.45pm. We would highly recommend this Ryokan if you do not mind the added journey.

It's a good hotel but it's a little bit further to Nikko ( take 2 trains, 3 stop not JR just 300 yens) Station KOSAGOE and 10 mn by foot
but if you want calm and tranquility it's for you!
The team is very nice, the training room too
Onsens spring hot is very good.

The room is traditional, very clean, and the dinning is traditional japanese.

Ryokan Funamisou is, without doubt, the best place I've stayed in Japan. Everything is nice and elegant, the staff is extremely helpful (they even drove us back to the station in their car cause our luggage was so heavy), the rooms are beautiful and spaceous and the Onsen are paradise! The gym is also extremely well equiped. so, if you are looking for some peace and relax during your journey in Japan, Funamisou Ryokan is the best place to charge batteries. If I could go back in time, I´d definately go there again!

I felt warmly welcomed to the ryokan and had a wonderful chat with the affable innkeeper when I arrived. Even though my husband and I had initially arranged not to eat at the ryokan, the innkeeper talked the kitchen into letting us change our plans. Good thing we did; the food was delicious, plentiful, and amazingly cheap.

I enjoyed the onsen, and I found the tatami-floored room to be charming, beautiful, and relaxing. I felt purified just by being at the ryokan, not least because of the gorgeous grounds. From your room you can see waterfalls plunging into a sea-foam green river. Incredible.

The ryokan was much farther from Nikko than we expected. We spent a lot of time traveling to and from the ryokan. I wish I'd been more aware of this beforehand so that I could have planned better. It would also have been nice if the ryokan had some kind of shuttle to Nikko, but perhaps that's not possible.

Anyway, we had a terrific time, and I highly recommend this ryokan.

Staff were delightful.A very misleading internet site. The ryocan resembles a rehabilitation center. The ryocan is in Nikko Prefecture NOT in the town of Nikko(another 1 hour journey by train from Nikko). The location is difficult to find and a long walk from the station.A disappointing destination for a tourist. The othe 3 tourists staying ended up there for the same misleading reason we did.

Service was impeccable, everybody was nice and helpful far beyond what could be (and was) expected. Breakfast and dinner were always excellent, the latter being so plentiful that I had to abstain from eating any rice at all (which prompted them to bring me another clam soup to recompensate me). There is a nice view from the rooms and from the "rotenburo" (outdoors hot spring bath) as well, although a safety fence is slightly intruding there.

The location is easy and quick to reach from Kosagoe station, pickup can be arranged for. Although only one train per hour per direction starts from Kosagoe, this is made up for by the convenient location between great sightseeing spots: Nikkô and its nature resorts on the one side and the hot springs and dazzlingly beautiful waterfalls in Kinugawa Onsen (and beyond) on the other side. Again the staff was very helpful in picking the right sightseeing spots for the available time and prompted me to some gorgeous locations I would never have gone to otherwise.

I enjoyed my stay there immensely and can recommend the place wholeheartedly. In fact, I am already making plans to return in another season.

There should be no language problems, since at least one staff member speaks English and even Italian.

It took a while to locate the building (I forgot to print the very detailed directions from the web), but once booked in everyone was very friendly and happy to help. The room was clean and comfortable and the food was exquisite. The Onsen was also very nice, relaxing after long days walking around Nikko.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the Hotel Manager was an absolute gentleman. The hot water spring was an added bonus with fresh water being pumped in to the spring 24 hours a day. Plus you can reserve time with your family in a special "private" family bath area. There is a no smoking floor and gymnasium with massage machines that every gymnasium should have in Australia!
The hotel even drove us to Edo Mura and Kinugawa train station to help us out. We will definitely stay here again.
Thank you for a delightful stay.

The Information in your Homepage is not exactly, Exit from the train is not in East side, but in West side, the price of the trainticket is not 2320 yen, only 1320 yen.
The room and the ryokan was very good with onsen and at the river.
But one thing we din`t understand on the Check-in day, we came from Tokyo, the weather was very bad, only raining, we walked about 20 min. with many luggages und ware very wet, we didn`t know, why this of the reception let us come to the room, we came the first time there, that is ony a little town, es was very cool and wet, we didn´t have any choice, took the train again came back to Nikko, in short time in Nikko was dark and raining und went back your Ryokan, until now we don´t understand, your Ryokan in this time didn´t have any room for us or what?

It's been a long time since I last did onsen with "Nigori-yu". I stayed at the Annex building. They have onsen baths in both Annex and Main building and I could try all of them. It was really nice. I even tried the private family onsen which is free. I will come again when I have the chance.

The staff are really polite. There were many different dishes for dinner. All very tasty. The Manageress came to greet us during dinner which was nice. We enjoyed the private onsen bath also.

The onsen was a bit too hot for me. But I liked the private onsen bath. The hot pot dish at dinner was excellent, also the fried egg (Tamogo-yaki) in breakfast. I ate a lot of rice. Thank you very much. I hope to come again.

The bath was a bit too hot. I was too lazy to go to the Main Building to try the onsen baths there but the ones at the Annex where I stayed were good. I was the only at the onsen so I could really enjoy and relax. There was a large variety of dishes at dinner. I was really satisfied. I stayed at a room in the "Sakura Pavilion" this time. The view was great. I want to come again during the "Daimoji-yaki" festival where I can see the burning word on the mountain from the room.
